LinkedIn outreach for security: the slow path that scales

A patient, low volume LinkedIn practice produces better meetings than any cold email channel we have measured. The reason is simple.

The most underestimated outbound channel in our category is LinkedIn, used patiently. Almost nobody does it well. The reps who do produce meeting quality that beats every other channel we have measured. The reason is straightforward. LinkedIn is the only channel where you can reasonably expect your message to be read by the actual decision maker without going through a gatekeeper.

Why the volume play does not work

Automation tools have been hammered. Sales Navigator restrictions have tightened. The accounts that send 200 connection requests a week eventually get capped, then suspended. The volume play is dead in 2026. What replaced it is the patient play, and the patient play is wildly underleveraged.

What the patient play looks like

  • Five to ten connection requests per week, per rep, each with a personal note under 240 characters
  • Engagement on the prospect's posts where there is a genuine reason to comment, not as a tactic
  • One thoughtful direct message per week to a connected target, referencing a real signal
  • Patience. Two to four weeks before any meaningful response from most senior buyers

The connection note that works

Mention the signal in the note. Not the pitch. We just saw the permit filing on the Lincoln distribution center, would love to connect. That is enough. The buyer accepts because the note is specific. Two weeks later, when you send a thoughtful DM, the buyer already knows who you are.

The single most underrated LinkedIn move is the rep who comments thoughtfully on a prospect's quarterly results post. Three weeks later they are the first DM the prospect actually reads.

How we use it inside Blacksmith

Every signal in Blacksmith surfaces the LinkedIn profiles of the most relevant buyers, with a one click connection note that includes the signal context. We do not automate the connection. We just remove the friction. The rep still has to decide to send it. The patience is theirs to keep.

Five LinkedIn connections per week, made well, will outperform 500 cold emails per week in our category. We have the data.

If this resonated, it'll feel familiar in the product.
